---- — An Oneonta restaurant owner was critically injured and his mother was killed Sunday night in a two-car accident, a family member said. The 2011 Audi that Vincenzo Avanzato, 57, of Oneonta, was driving collided at about 8:40 p.m. on state Route 17 in the village of Goshen with a car being driven by a Chester man declared dead at the scene following the accident, state police in Goshen said.
Vincenzo Avanzato will recover from his injuries, brother Antonio Avanzato said Monday, but their mother, Giuseppa Avanzato, 90, who was in the back seat, died from internal injuries, troopers said. Vincenzo and brother Antonio own Stella Luna Ristorante.
Avanzato, his mother and two others injured in the car were taken to Orange Regional Medical Center, troopers said. A spokesman there said Vincenzo Avanzato is in serious but stable condition.
Two passengers in Avanzato’s car, his wife Ruth, 56, and visitor Marco Lelli, 19, were treated and released, troopers and family said.
The accident occurred when Avanzato was driving west on state Route 17, troopers said. A 1994 Jeep Wrangler driven by Julian Hermosillo, 29, of Chester, was traveling east on state Route 17 when he lost control of his vehicle, crossing over the guardrail and colliding with Avanzato’s car.
The accident is under investigation. The Goshen Fire Department, Goshen Volunteer Ambulance Corp. and Mobil Life responded to and assisted at the scene, troopers said.
