Anita Cardinale is a 78-year-old retired nurse who had come to look forward to the hot meals delivered to her Springfield home on weekdays. Most Otsego County residents are now living in communities that have enacted bans or moratorium against gas drilling.

This week, the town of Butternuts approved a ban on shale gas drilling and storage, with a 3-2 vote of the town board, Butternuts Town Supervisor Charles Eckelmann said.

By another 3-2 vote earlier in the week, the town of Hartwick approved an eight-month moratorium against all heavy industry, including gas drilling.

Also: Area schools are safer today than at the time of the Newtown school shootings, officials interviewed about the subject said Thursday.

Saturday will mark the one-year anniversary of the shootings at the Connecticut elementary school, in which 20-year-old Adam Lanza shot and killed 20 students, six administrators, his mother and himself.

In sports: Seth Arnold, Nicholas Jump and Kai Sabada won by pinfall Thursday to lead Sidney to a 46-33 Midstate Athletic Conference wrestling victory over visiting Delhi.
