Forecasters warn of weekend storm

There is an 80 percent chance of four to eight inches of snow in the area from 10 a.m. Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday, according to a weather advisory from the National Weather Service in Binghamton.

The advisory covered Otsego and Delaware counties and surrounding areas, with snow expected to spread over the area Saturday morning with the heaviest snowfall in the evening.

Oneonta Public Service Supervisor Larry Harrison said that whatever happens, his department is ready. He was monitoring three of four different websites during the day when interviewed Friday, and said from what he has seen, the snowfall could range between five and 10 inches.

A salt crew was coming in at 11 p.m. Friday, and if they can’t keep up, others will be called in, Harrison said. The plows and sanders were ready and all he could do now as wait to see whether the storm will arrive as predicted or “pass us by.”

With the recent storm that hit the area, there has been more snow at this point than in previous years, he said. But with an adequate balance in the 2013 budget available and a new year starting soon,“we are in good shape.”

National Weather Service at Binghamton meteorologist Joanne LaBounty said the storm that is forming includes an area of low pressure that moves into the Ohio Valley this afternoon. It will weaken and transfer its energy to a system that is developing off the coast, she said.

Friday’s snow was the result of lake effect, she said.
