Otsego, Delaware deputies report drug busts

Staff Report
The Daily Star

---- — Two local law enforcement agencies reported separate drug arrests recently.

In the first case, a 44-year-old Stamford man was arrested Wednesday afternoon on drug and weapons charges, according to Delaware County deputies.

Hector L. Padilla, Jr. was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a class B felony, and three counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He is accused of possessing the heroin with intent to sell.

The arrest is the result of a seven-month investigation conducted by Criminal Investigation Division of the Sheriff’s Office, in cooperation with the state police, and the execution of a search warrant at the Padilla’s village of Stamford residence, deputies said.

The search led to the seizure of 65 bags of heroin, a loaded handgun, a stun gun, numerous prescription medications and nearly $700 in cash, deputies said. The sheriff’s office said narcotics detection canine “Ozzie” assisted in conducting the search. The recovered handgun was one of several handguns reported missing from the estate of a South Kortright resident who died earlier this year.

Padilla was arraigned in Harpersfield Town Court and jailed on $30,000 cash bail pending further court action. Investigators anticipate additional charges relating to heroin and prescription narcotic sales will be filed against him at a later time, deputies said.

In another case, Otsego County deputies executed two drug-related search warrants in the city of Oneonta, Sheriff Richard Devlin said Thursday.

On Wednesday afternoon, one was executed in the Division Street area, and deputies searched a home on West Street on Thursday morning. With debriefings still going on, Devlin said he was not prepared to name who was in custody. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by other law enforcement agencies, he said. More information about the warrants will be released shortly, he said.
