A Monday morning fire in the village of Delhi destroyed a multi-family dwelling, Delhi Fire Chief Daren Evans said.
The fire at 4 Franklin St. was reported at about 8:30 a.m., he said, adding “it was pretty well engulfed when we got there.” It was a total loss, Evans said, but the fire was contained to the building. Evans hadn’t yet determined the owner of the building and didn’t have details on its occupants when he was contacted at about 2:30 p.m., shortly after returning from the blaze. There were no injuries, he said.
According to a report on the Watershed Post website, assistant fire chief Steve Hood said the house belonged to Gerard and Lilly Breen. The couple rented several apartments on the second and third floors of their home to tenants, he said.
Four SUNY Delhi students, three of their guests, and another woman who lived in an apartment on the third floor were in the house at the time of the fire, Hood said.
The cause has not been determined by Delaware County Emergency Services, Evans said.
Fire departments from Walton, Bovina and Bloomfield provided mutual aid. The FAST teams from Franklin and Oneonta fire departments also provided assistance, he said.
