Mills to seek re-election as Delaware County Sheriff

---- — Delaware County Sheriff Tom Mills, a retired state trooper who has held his current job since 1999, announced Friday he will seek re-election this year.

Mills, a Republican, touted the fact that the sheriff’s office succeeded in offsetting about 10 percent of the jail’s operating budget by taking in $574,132 through “conscientious efforts to use unoccupied jail cells for boarding both federal prisoners and inmates from neighboring counties.”

Mills, who has also served as an Oneonta police officer as well as chief of the Delhi Village Police, said he is seeking the creation of a multi-agency county-wide drug enforcement task force whose goal is to eradicate illegal drug use in the county.

Another goal is to get the department’s civil and corrections divisions accredited by the state, he said. The law enforcement division was accredited in 2010.

Mills has no announced challengers.
