Area crews cope with storm's aftermath

A wind chill advisory is in effect in the area until 9 a.m. Saturday, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Binghamton said. With temperatures overnight Friday reaching as low as minus 10 degrees, wind-chill temperatures could reach minus 25 degrees.

Snowfall from the recent storm ranged from about 5 inches in Delhi to 9½ inches in Morris, meteorologist Mike Nadolski said.

Emergency service personnel reported only minor accidents around the area as a result.

Two troopers received minor injuries Thursday when a car driven by a 45-year-old Delhi resident at about 10:40 p.m lost control on the snow-covered roadway, state police at Sidney said. They said the troopers were seated in their vehicle on state Route 28 in the town of Meredith when they were struck from behind. The two were assisting a motorist whose vehicle had slid off the roadway.

The troopers, who were not identified, were treated and released from A.O. Fox Hospital. The driver, Baburao N. Samudrala, was not injured. The accident remains under investigation.

In other weather-related activities,Oneonta police towed nine vehicles Thursday evening to help the Department of Public Works clear the roads, Lt. Douglas Brenner said. He said he was glad that most people heeded the city’s snow regulations, since towing is “a real inconvenience for everyone.”

People had enough of a warning about the storm so they were more cautious in their driving, meaning fewer accidents, he said, and he knew of no weather-related emergencies.

Oneonta Fire Capt. Jeff Pidgeon said Friday afternoon that his department responded to a frozen pipe at Hannaford supermarket at about 3:40 p.m. When a crew arrived, the situation had been handled by the store, he said. There was a water main break at Spruce and Elm streets at about 6:30 p.m., apparently also from the weather, he said. A city crew was still working on it at 9:30 p.m.
