Menacing suspect's bail set at $500K

Barry M. Renert was returned Sunday evening to Otsego County after waiving extradition in Virginia, Cooperstown police said.

He was arraigned before Cooperstown Justice Gary M. Kuch and charged with second-degree burglary. Bail was set at $500,000 cash or $1 million bond and he was sent to Otsego County jail. His next scheduled appearance is tentatively set for Jan. 8 in the Cooperstown Village Court, police said. He will be represented in court by the public defender’s office.

Renert was arrested in Virginia on the night of Dec. 23, following an extensive manhunt.

That morning, according to law enforcement, he entered the Seventh Inning Stretch store in Cooperstown, his former place of employment, wearing a ski mask and black clothing. Renert then confronted the store’s owner, Vincent Carfagno, and displayed a 9mm Glock handgun. Carfagno went to the floor, produced his own handgun and fired a shot, which missed and caused Renert to flee.

The incident kicked off a multi-agency investigation that culminated in the arrest.
