Agency offers free tax preparation assistance

A local agency is reminding Chenango County residents that free tax preparation help is available.

The Creating Assets, Savings and Hope Coalition of Chenango and Madison Counties, or CASH Coalition, offers the service annually at no charge to county residents earning less than $51,000 per year. The service is available by appointment from January through April at Cornell Cooperative Extension in Norwich.

Senior citizens ages 60 and older are eligible for free tax return preparation regardless of income. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call Chenango County Area Agency on Aging at 337-1770.

According to a media release from the CASH Coalition, the service pairs taxpayers with trained community volunteers who look to ensure that special credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit and Credit for the Elderly are claimed. The service offers electronic filing to facilitate speedy tax returns for those who will receive them.

Those who wish to take advantage of the free service are asked to prepare the following documents:

Photo proof of identification; Social Security cards and birth dates for everyone listed on the tax return; wage and earning statements (forms W-2, W-2G and 1099-R) from all employers; interest and dividend statements (form 1099); copies of prior federal and state returns; bank routing and account numbers for direct deposit of refunds; amounts paid for day care, if applicable; and any other relevant information about income and expenses (such as student loans).

Daytime, evening and weekend appointments are available Tuesdays through Saturdays from the end of January through the beginning of April.  Before calling for an appointment, taxpayers should have all documents and information available for review. To schedule an appointment, call Cornell Cooperative Extension at 334-5841, ext. 11.
