A man whose body was recovered while police investigators were trying to question him about the theft of more than 20 guns from a Norwich store died from hypothermia and a drug overdose, state police said Monday.
Christopher M. Gonzalez, 29, whose body was found Friday in a wooded area off Guinn Ridge Road in Norwich, was suspected of having participated in two burglaries last week at Mayhood’s Sporting Goods on state Route 12 in Norwich.
The break-ins occurred at 9:52 p.m. on Jan. 6 and at 6 a.m. on Jan. 7, said State Police Capt. James Barnes.
State police said last Wednesday they were seeking to question Gonzalez in connection with the crimes. Stolen were 22 handguns, several long guns and numerous boxes of ammunition, troopers said.
All of the weapons have been recovered, Barnes told The Daily Star.
The cause of Gonzalez’s death was determined by an autopsy at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton, police said.
Also being linked by police to the Mayhood’s burglaries is Gonzalez’s girlfriend, Brandy L. Bousson, 25, of Norwich. Charged with third-degree burglary, Bousson has been ordered held at the Chenango County Jail for lack of $25,000 bail. She was arraigned in Norwich Town Court last Wednesday following her arrest.
