---- — State police in Troop C are warning the public that a counterfeit $100 bill was used in the Ithaca area last week.

Troopers are looking for a suspect who used the currency to buy a gallon of cider at Gregg’s Market in Marathon on March 21, troopers said in a media release. An investigation determined that the bill, which had passed a security counterfeit marker test by the store cashier, is counterfeit.

Lt. Douglas Brenner of the Oneonta Police Department said he was surprised that the bill passed the counterfeit test conducted by the cashier.

Suspicious bills turn up once in a while at local grocery or convenience stores, Brenner said Wednesday, but no counterfeit bills have been reported to city police in at least three years.
