Troopers: Woman died of smoke inhalation

A Richfield Springs woman killed in a fire Saturday died of asphyxiation, state police at Sidney said.

Mary E. Weingates, 59, a science teacher at Richfield Springs Central School, died in her home during a fire.

An autopsy conducted at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady ruled the cause of death as accidental and attributed to asphyxiation from smoke inhalation, troopers said Thursday.

The cause of the fire has been under investigation but is considered accidental, Otsego County fire investigators said earlier this week.

A celebration of life program will be held in memory of Weingates, a beloved teacher, at the Richfield Springs school at 1 p.m. Saturday, school officials said.
