An early Friday morning fire at Becker’s Tire Service on state Route 30 in the hamlet of Grand Gorge left the business a total loss, Grand Gorge Fire Chief D.J. Speenburgh said.
The department was called out at 12:20 a.m., he said.
“The fire had a good start when we got there, there was heavy fire and smoke,” he said.
The cause is still under investigation. Speenburgh said he believes there was insurance on the business, owned by Ricky Haight.
There was no telephone listing found for Haight so he could not be contacted for comment.
The department was there until about 10 to 11 a.m. extinguishing the fire, Speenburgh said. Members of the department were there until about 3 p.m. working with state and county fire investigators.
Fire departments from Arkville, Halcottsville, Hobart, Margaretville, Prattsville, Roxbury, Stamford were among those providing mutual aid.
About 100 firefighters were at the scene, he said. There were no injuries.
