---- — George F. Palladino was appointed Wednesday to fill a vacancy on the the Oneonta City School Board of Education during the regular meeting.

Palladino, who served at the district’s chairman of the facilities, space and transportation committee in 2011, has a grandchild at Greater Plains Elementary.

He was born and raised in Troy and received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Siena College in Loudonville, according to information provided by the Oneonta district.

He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and was appointed professor of chemistry at the United States Military Academy in 1976. He was promoted to colonel in 1986. While there, he received the state Science Teachers Executive of the Year Award.

After his Army career, Palladino’s achievements include being appointed as vice chairman and executive director of the chemistry department at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

In 2006, he was appointed vice dean of the College of Science and Technology at Temple University.

He and his wife Theresa moved to Oneonta in 2002.

Oneonta Superintendent Joseph Yelich said the board of education was fortunate to have five highly qualified candidates for the vacancy that followed the resignation of Rosalie Higgins effective earlier this month.

With Palladino’s background in education he seemed like “a good fit,” Yelich said.
