---- — A Roxbury man has been arrested in a bear poaching case, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation police in Delaware County.
George W. Wyble, 66, was charged with shooting across a public highway and killing a black bear during a closed season May 26, both misdemeanors, a DEC media release said.
Wyble said he fired his rifle at an 85-pound black bear he saw walking across the street from his residence, the release said, and after he fired, the bear ran into the woods and disappeared.
DEC police worked with the Roxbury town constable to investigate the incident, and found out that the town highway department had picked up a dead bear, which was believed to have been struck by a vehicle and killed, near the Wyble residence.
The dead bear was sent to DEC’s wildlife pathology laboratory in Albany County where a necropsy determined that the bear had been killed by a single gunshot, the release said.
The case is pending prosecution in the Roxbury Town Court. If convicted, Wyble could face up to a $2,000 fine and/or up to 90 days in jail for each count, according to the release.
