Schumer: Stream gauges will stay

---- — U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said Monday he is now optimistic that funding will be provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to keep stream gauges in the Susquehanna River basin region operating through the end of the year.

Schu-mer said in a media release that the devices are “critical” in determining when local waterways are nearing flooding levels. He characterized his discussions with NOAA as “positive,” and suggested the agency will find the $215,000 needed to allow the stream gauges to continue to function.

The gauges were slated to be switched off next month, but Schumer said the U.S. Geological Survey has signaled it will keep them running until June 1.

Among the gauges involved in the funding drama are two on the Susquehanna River, one in Oneonta and one in Bainbridge. Four gauges in the network sit along the Chenango River — in Greene, Norwich, Oxford and Sherburne.
