---- — Area state police made more than 50 arrests for drunken driving during a nationwide enforcement period between Dec. 14 and Tuesday, media releases said.

Unadilla-based Troop C members made 45 arrests for driving while intoxicated, 863 for speeding and a total in traffic tickets of 2,516, a release said. In Troop G, which includes the area covered by Cobleskill troopers, there were 66 DWI arrests, 992 for speeding and total traffic tickets of 3,077.

Troop C Commander Maj. Kevin Molinari said the campaign concluded with “very positive results for all users of the highways in the seven counties of Troop C.’’ Of the more than 40 arrests for DWI, five were made while investigating personal injury accidents, he said.

“Drunk driving is a behavioral choice that will not be tolerated,’’ Molinari said in a statement. “Not only do you risk killing yourself, but your conduct also places the lives of innocent motorists and vehicle occupants at unnecessary risk.”

More than 20,000 police agencies nationwide participated in the anti-DWI campaign. New York troopers issued more than 33,000 tickets statewide and made 538 DWI arrests. Twelve fatal crashes were investigated, the releases said, and more than 10,000 drivers were ticketed for speed, not wearing seat belts or properly restraining children in vehicles.

In addition, 12 underage drinking initiative details checked 14 bars and 120 retail establishments across the state, authorities said, and troopers made 22 arrests for providing alcohol to minors and 12 penal law violations.
