A Utica woman has been arrested and accused of impersonating a lawyer, according to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office.
Veronica Donahue, 36, was arrested Tuesday and charged with practicing or appearing as an attorney-at-law without being admitted and registered, a misdemeanor.
Donahue allegedly attempted to represent the recipient of a traffic ticket during a session of the Town of North Norwich Court, said Detective Gary Miller of the sheriff’s office. The “client” apparently was unaware Donahue was not a lawyer, Miller said.
She is not an admitted or registered attorney, the sheriff’s office said in a press release.
Miller said that a source called the court about Donahue’s lack of credentials, and that court staff passed the information along to the sheriff’s office.
“It’s the first time I’ve ever seen anything like this,” he said.
Donahue was issued an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in the Town of North Norwich Court at a later date.
