A local school district will celebrate its participation in a national anti-bullying effort with a kickoff event Feb. 7.
Delaware Academy Central School District at Delhi has signed on to the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, described in a media release as a “research-based schoolwide ‘systems-change’ program.”
According to the release, “This program is not a curriculum that students participate in for only a few weeks. Rather, it is a coordinated effort by all the adults in the school to supervise and intervene when any bullying happens. As part of the program, students participate in programs to learn about the effects of bullying, what they can do about it, and how they can work with adults at school to put a stop to it even as bystanders. Parents will have opportunities to discuss this program so they can support the messages students are getting in school.”
The district has formed an Olweus Bullying Prevention Committee, consisting of Michelle Cleveland, Allison Cole, Yvone Bowker, Chris Miller, Matt Albright, Billi Jo Bender, Dulcie Cole, Jeff Ferrara, Anne Gregory, Terri Sherman, Kim Collison, Gregg Verspoor, Laurie Alberti, Brian Rolfe, Stacy Laymon, Bill Bartett, Judi Byam, Todd Bruce, Jessica Sobers, Tiffany Bennett, Marian Chrisman, Jen Doig and Jason Thomson.
