Delaware supervisors to host hearings on tax hike

The Delaware County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing at 12:45 p.m. today at the supervisor’s room of the county office building in Delhi concerning a local law to override the state’s 2 percent tax levy limit. A second public hearing is scheduled at 12:50 p.m. concerning salary increases for department heads. The regular board of supervisors meeting is scheduled for 1 p.m.

The budget was still being worked Tuesday afternoon, so Board of Supervisors Chairman James Eisel said he did not have exact numbers. He was not certain how much the budget would exceed the approximately 2 percent tax levy cap by. The total should be less than 5 percent, he said.

The increase was needed because of contractual increases for fringe benefits, including retirement and health care costs. In addition, the budget provides employees with a $1,000 raise. Two out of the last three years there was no increase, he said.

The budget expenditures were reduced from $99.7 million this year, to $96.8 million in the budget under discussion. This came about through the privatization of the certified home health aides, and a variety of cuts to different department. Unfortunately, he said, revenues have also declined.

How the county proceeds on the budget will depend upon the supervisors. If officials are willing to move ahead, a public hearing could be scheduled Nov. 28, before a final decision is made.
