Taste of the Catskills to return to Delhi|

An opportunity to enjoy local food, music and fun returns to Delhi this weekend.

The Taste of the Catskills Festival is a family-friendly event that showcases food, beer, crafters and wine of our region, organizers said. Events start at 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday at Maple Shade Farm located at 2066 County Route 18. Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for children ages 6 to 12, and those age 5 and under are free.

This is the fifth event in four years, farm owner Jay Wilson said. It started after Quarter Moon Cafe owner Jonah Shaw, who is also involved with the event, came to him with the idea for a festival to focus on local farmers and artisans.

“It complemented what we were doing with fall agritourism,” Wilson said. “It gets better every year.”

Shaw said the weekend is shaping up well. Favorable weather reports are “a huge plus for us” that could result in attendance of 4,000 to 5,000.

While events like this have a valuable educational component in helping visitors learn where their food comes from and eating healthy, “it’s also a lot of fun,” he said. “It’s a wonderful opportunity” for people of all ages. Workshops each day teach attendees about farming, cooking, brewing, and vintning.

Besides the daily entertainment, there is a dinner each night starting at 5 p.m. that features pigs from Maple Shade and ingredients from local farms. Saturday concludes with a fireworks display at dark, sponsored by the Delaware National Bank of Delhi.

One of the ways the event is kept fresh is by listening to suggestions and building on what is successful, Shaw said. New this year are the Farm Olympics — team competitions — and remote-control airplane shows by Oneonta Radio Flyers.

Entertainment includes music outdoors and on the acoustic barn stage. Youth entertainment includes performances by Catskill Puppets and Arms of Sea Theater.

The festival will also include a wedding exposition sponsored by Morris Tent.

“It’s a relaxing weekend when kids (and others) can have a great time,” Wilson said.
