Events canceled ahead of storm

In Delaware County on Sunday, two events scheduled for today at SUNY Delhi were canceled because of the pending storm, a media release from the college said Sunday.

The events, which were in conjunction with SUNY Delhi’s Centennial Celebration, were the “100 Year Happening Haunted House,” and the Mission: Wolf educational presentation. College officials said they would try to reschedule both events.

Also for today, the Walton Central School District will operate on a half-day schedule, a media notice said.

Townsend Elementary School pupils will be dismissed at 11:30 a.m., and the middle and high school dismissal will be at 11:45 a.m.

Contact Numbers

Area officials Sunday urged residents to prepare for heavy rain, windy conditions and possible power outages this week.

Officials released telephone numbers Sunday to call for information or to report an emergency situation, including:

• The state Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services said residents may call the Hurricane Sandy help line at (888) 769-7243 or (518) 485-1159 for inquiries related to citizen preparedness information.

• New York State Electric and Gas Corp. reporting downed power lines or electrical hazards should call (800) 572-1131. NYSEG’s line for natural gas emergencies is (800) 572-1121.

• NYSEG said anyone who uses life-sustaining equipment that operates on electricity should call (800) 572-1111 for how to prepare for power interruptions.

• Time Warner Cable customers may call (800) TWC-HELP to find out about or report an interruption in service.

Emergency Supply Kit

The village of Sidney distributed a list of emergency supplies to have in case of emergencies, including times without electricity, water or heat, or an evacuation. The suggested items included:

• A portable battery-operated radio, flashlights and extra batteries.

• A supply for three or more days of water — one gallon per person per day; a three- to five-day supply of nonperishable foods that do not require refrigeration, such as peanut butter, crackers and other high-energy foods.
