Damage to the bridge on Otsego County Route 11C in the town of Hartwick has resulted in traffic detours and changes to the Oneonta Public Transit routes for buses between Oneonta and Cooperstown, officials said Wednesday.
At about 9:10 a.m. Wednesday, the driver of a tractor-trailer tried to go over the bridge, but the vehicle was too high to clear the older-style steel beam structure and became stuck, Trooper Daniel Butler of state police at Richfield Springs said.
When the driver backed up, a steel beam came off on top of the tractor-trailer, Butler said, and an Otsego County Highway Department employee used a piece of heavy equipment to remove the beam from the top of the tractor-trailer. No one was hurt during the incident.
The bridge had a clearance of 10 feet, 3 inches, Butler said, and the truck was 13 feet, 4 inches high. The bridge was significantly damaged and has been closed, he said.
County Route 11C runs between state Route 28 and county Route 33, and traffic cannot go over the bridge until it is fixed, officials said. The bridge goes over the Susquehanna River.
The tractor-trailer was en route to make a delivery at Brewery Ommegang, Butler said. The driver, Steven Marrero, 36, of Newark, N.J., was ticketed for exceeding the clearance and for an equipment violation, a light, Butler said.
Marrero, who was driving for Argentum Services LLC of Elizabeth, N.J., was able to make his delivery of unspecified items, Butler said.
Otsego County deputies, a trooper from the state police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit and county highway department staff were at the scene to assist with traffic detours and restoring the tractor-trailer to the roadway, Butler said.
The city of Oneonta issued a media release Wednesday to announce that OPT has changed the Route 28 Oneonta to Cooperstown bus schedule to accommodate stops at the Meadow’s Office Complex. The changes will be in effect until the bridge is re-opened, officials said, and the schedule is listed below:
• The 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. northbound runs will detour off of Route 28 in Milford and take county Route 33 to the Meadows before proceeding on Route 33 into Cooperstown.
• The 6 a.m., 7 a.m., 8 a.m., 10 a.m. 12 noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. northbound runs will follow the regular route and remain on Route 28.
• The hourly southbound Route 28 schedule from Cooperstown to Oneonta is unaffected.
