---- — The destination for a Walton teen this summer is the Pacific Northwest, thanks to the Girl Scouts of America.

Kimberly Kehr, an 11th grader at Walton Central School, has been chosen to attend the San Juan Pack Destination in Anacortes, Wash., from July 28 to Aug. 3, according to a Girl Scout official.

She will be joined by 17 others from around the world through the Girls Scouts’ Destinations travel program. Kehr could not be reached for comment.

The Destinations program gives girls in grades six through 12 the chance to travel domestically and overseas, meet new people and broaden their outlook on the world, a media release said.

The trip includes kayaking and camping on the San Juan Islands and searches for orcas, the release said.

The area is only accessible by kayaks. Girls sleep under the stars, the release said, and are involved in activities that help them explore leadership, communication, team building skills, working and living together.

Kehr was chosen from the numerous applications submitted on the strength of an essay and references. Karen Strife, program manager for the Girl Scouts of NYPenn Pathways, said, “It’s quite an honor.”

Her share of the excursion is $1,600. Kehr has traveled through the program before, which is another factor in her favor, Strife said.
