Week in Review: Manor inches closer to sale; new year ushered in

This weekend feature offers a recap of the week’s top local stories:

MONDAY

The word “frack” showed up in The Daily Star only a handful of times in 2012. Instead, the buzzword of choice was “pipeline,” a keyword that returns search results too numerous to tabulate. But at the heart of it all is still natural gas — the subject that has dominated local news coverage, to a great extent, for the better part of four years now.

In sports: Tournament MVP Joseph Kelly scored a game-high 15 points Saturday to lead Richfield Springs to a 48-30 boys basketball victory over Cherry Valley-Springfield in the championship game of the CV-S Tournament.

TUESDAY

The Daily Star did not publish on New Year’s Day.

WEDNESDAY

Flame-throwers, music-makers, dancers and fireworks were among highlights in Oneonta’s First Night party to ring in the New Year.

Classical, folk, Irish, Broadway and jazz were among musical genres presented by local and out-of-town performers. A display of raptors, activities for children and performances by dancers and puppets were part of Monday night’s program.

In sports: Decisions, decisions.

Whether to choose a group of athletes who accomplished a season-long goal in dramatic fashion or a singular athlete with area roots who came within seconds of an Olympic medal.

The Daily Star’s sports department opted for Oneonta High’s baseball team over former Cooperstown resident Sarah Groff for its top story of 2012.

THURSDAY

Two months after more than 1,500 people signed a petition urging that Otsego Manor not be privatized, Otsego County lawmakers are inching closer to recruiting a consultant who would help them market the home.

In sports: Unatego senior Tyler Butler’s First Team selection in Class D led a group of eight area players who earned all-state football recognition.
