Chobani to be served at Obama inauguration

Chobani yogurt will be joining other products from upstate New York at the 2013 inaugural ceremonies, according to a media release from Sen. Charles Schumer.

Schumer announced Friday that plain and vanilla Chobani yogurt will be served with strawberries, pineapples, pears and granola toppings to inaugural guests at President Barack Obama’s inauguration celebration Jan. 21.

The yogurt will join aged cheese from the Cooperstown Cheese Co., as well as apples from Columbia County, honey from Rochester and wines from the Finger Lakes region, at the inaugural.

Schumer, who is chairman of the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, said the choice of Chobani Greek yogurt is a nod to New York’s dairy industry.

“We’re incredibly proud of our New York roots and honored to be a part of the Inaugural Ceremonies as we look towards America’s future,” Chobani founder, President and CEO Hamdi Ulukaya said in the release. “The Chobani story demonstrates that the American spirit is alive and well and proves that if you truly believe in something and work hard, anything is possible.”

The luncheon menu reflects Schumer’s choice of a theme for the 57th Inaugural Ceremonies. “Faith in America’s Future” commemorates the United States’ perseverance and unity and marks the sesquicentennial year of the placement of the Statue of Freedom atop the new Capitol dome in 1863.

When the Civil War threatened to bring construction of the dome to a halt, workers pressed onward, even without pay, until Congress approved additional funding to complete the dome that would become a symbol of unity and democracy to the entire world. The menu features American agricultural products that have long been popular in our cuisine, but with an added modern touch.
