Week in Review: Drugs stolen from Covidien; fire empties SUCO dorm

In a Midstate Athletic Conference match that featured nine pins, Sidney defeated the host Spartans, 45-34.

A fire at Matteson Hall, a SUNY Oneonta dormitory, displaced 177 residents Wednesday, officials said, but no one was hurt.

About 60 firefighters from multiple area departments aggressively fought the fire, which started in a suite on the third floor at 14 East Dorm Drive, Oneonta Fire Chief Patrick Pidgeon said Wednesday night. The fire started at about 4 p.m. and was under control in less than an hour, he said.

In sports: Unadilla Valley senior Justin Hofer scored his season-high of 31 points and surpassed 1,000 varsity points in leading the visiting Storm to a 62-43 Midstate Athletic Conference victory over Harpursville on Wednesday.

SUNY Oneonta officials worked Thursday on short- and long-term accommodations for 175 residents of Matteson Hall displaced by a fire the previous day that officials ruled was electrical and accidental in origin.

In sports: Alec Picinich and Mitchel Couch scored in double figures Thursday, leading the Oneonta High boys basketball team to a 48-41 Southern Tier Athletic Conference victory over visiting Windsor.

Picinich scored a team-best 13 points for the Jackets, who received 11 from Couch and at least five from four others.
