NWS: January warmer, drier than normal

January was warmer and drier then normal, according to a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Binghamton. Emmons NWS observer David Mattice said that was true on a local level as well.

The average temperature last month was 25.9 degrees, NWS meteorologist Joanne LaBounty said. That is 3.7 degrees above normal. It was cooler than in January 2012 when the average was 27.4 degrees.

“We didn’t break any records for high or low temperatures,” she said.

The precipitation last month was 2.25 inches, which was .2 below normal. The snowfall totaled 9.2 inches, which was 13 inches below normal. In January 2012, 3.04 inches of precipitation fell. This included 17.2 inches of snow.

Mattice said the normal mean temperature in Emmons is 21.3 degrees. In January, the average temperature was 2.8 degrees warmer. In January 2012, the mean temperature was 4.7 degrees above normal. The normal precipitation in Emmons is 2.54 inches. “We had 1.59 inches for the month,” he said. Normal snowfall is 17.9 inches. Last month, the total was 8.4 inches. In Jan. 2012 the total precipitation was 3.08 inches, including 11 inches of snowfall, Mattice said.
