A Harpursville man has been arrested after a car crash in Afton killed a passenger, state police at Norwich said.
Ryan V. Lewis, 22, was charged with driving while intoxicated and second-degree vehicular manslaughter, troopers said.
Front-seat passenger Joelyn L. Sines, 24, of Harpursville, was pronounced dead at the scene by Chenango County medical examiner David Hochmann after the crash on Afton Lake Road at about 2:20 a.m. Sunday, troopers said, and the cause of death was massive head trauma.
Lewis had lost control of his vehicle, which left the roadway and hit a tree on the passenger side, troopers said.
Backseat passengers, Mitchell D. Birch, 22, and Caleb J. Gregory, 22, both of Afton, were taken to Wilson Regional Medical Center in Johnson City, where they were in stable condition, a media release from troopers Monday said.
Lewis also was taken to the medical center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, the release said. He is to appear in Afton Town Court at a later date to answer the charges.
The Afton Fire Department and emergency crews helped troopers at the scene, and the investigation continues.
