---- — Margaretville gets new
Verizon cell site
Permanent Verizon Wireless service has been established in Margaretville for the first time, the company announced Tuesday.
The activation of a new cell site means that residents, visitors and first responders will have access to wireless voice and 4G LTE service in the village and the surrounding area. It replaces a cell-on-light-truck, or COLT, that had been in place since Hurricane Irene in August 2011.
“Verizon Wireless is providing essential telecommunication services to enhance the operations of businesses and lives of consumers in the community, and I thank the company for their continual investment in upstate New York,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a press release.
The 4G connectivity means that smart phones, tablets, smart accessories and machine-to-machine devices can be more fully used, the company said, providing greater access to data-heavy media, such as photos, music and video.
Verizon Wireless also activated a new cell last year in Prattsville, another community that experienced extensive storm damage. Together, the sites represent a $1 million investment, according to the company.
