---- — Two people have recently reported a scam that makes people think they have won the Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes, Otsego County Sheriff Richard Devlin Jr. said Thursday.
No money has been lost, he said, but scam artists are calling residents and soliciting information while sending out real-looking checks in an attempt to get people send money. Devlin said his office was contacted earlier this month by people in the Milford and Maryland area.
“They were suspicious so they contacted us,” he said.
A legitimate sweepstakes will never ask you to send money to enter, claim a prize, or pay a fee, tax or deposit, he said. The Publishers Clearing House never requires a payment to claim a prize.
