---- — A Schenevus man who rode his horse into Oneonta on Sunday has been accused of animal abuse, city police said.

Donald Lane, 42, was charged with torturing or injuring an animal, a misdemeanor under state Agriculture and Markets law, Lt. Douglas Brenner said Wednesday.

Lane also was charged with resisting arrest, having an open container of alcohol, a can of beer, and littering for tossing the can, Brenner said.

When police officers investigated a report of a man on a horse Sunday afternoon, Lane was “OK,’’ Brenner said.

Later, however, Lane was having trouble getting the horse to move and was seen whipping the animal with a stick, Brenner said.

Near Main Street and Eighth Avenue at about 10:10 p.m., police officers again spoke with Lane, Brenner said. The police report said officers found that the horse’s feet, which had no shoes, were in bad shape, and its right rear leg was injured.

Lane was intoxicated and fell off of the horse onto the ground at one point, Brenner said.

Police called veterinarian Liz Fish and Shadowrock Equine Veterinary Services on Lower Reservoir Road in Oneonta, which responded to collect the horse, Brenner said. A professional assessment of the horse’s condition was a “2’’ in an evaluation system where “9’’ is the best, he said, and the horse, which appeared to be going into shock, was given pain medication.

Lane, who was held in the city lockup overnight Sunday until sober, was released Monday, Brenner said.

Officers Trevor Drayn and Amanda Spoor arrested Lane, Brenner said, and the investigation continues because Lane may have other horses.
