Week in Review: Ex-Walton teacher accused of rape

This weekend feature offers a recap of the week’s top local stories:

Two vacancies in the Oneonta Police Department are under a microscope as the mayor and Common Council review the proposed 2013 budget.

In sports: Oneonta High’s girls took a physical pounding during Sunday’s Class B state soccer final and an emotional one following it.

The sight of senior goalie Emmalee Sloman on her knees with her forehead pressed against the artificial turf at Cortland State and her hands covering her head told the story. Sloman’s reaction came after the Yellowjackets’ 3-1 overtime loss to Greece Odyssey on a sunny but cool afternoon.

A 28-year-old biology teacher who until recently was on the faculty for the Walton School District has been charged with two felony counts of having sex with underage students at the school, authorities reported Monday.

In sports: The Hartwick College men’s swimming and diving team dominated the competition Saturday at the Hamilton Quad Meet to improve to 9-0 this season.

Hartwick downed the host school, 181-56; Ithaca, 138-99; and SUNY Geneseo, 166-65.

Details from depositions emerged Tuesday in the arrest of Stephanie M. Fletcher, a former Walton high school teacher accused of having sex with two underage students.

Fletcher, 28, of Walton, is charged with two counts of third-degree rape, one count of third-degree criminal sexual act and one count of endangering the welfare of a child.

The charges involve two male students who were 16 years old at the time of the alleged rapes, according to court papers requested by The Daily Star.

In sports: Alec Picinich scored 12 points Tuesday to lead an all-new starting five for the Oneonta High boys basketball team, which fell, 52-42, to visiting Johnson City in the season-opening Anthony C. Drago Tournament.

The Daily Star did not publish on Thanksgiving.
