---- — An update on the implementation of the Common Core state curriculum was presented during Wednesday’s regular Oneonta City School District Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Joseph Yelich said.

The session was held at Greater Plains Elementary School. At a previous meeting, parents and teachers expressed concerned about the curriculum and the modules used in its implementation. Yelich said he would be addressing those concerns.

At the meeting he told the board that he met with with representatives of the Oneonta Teachers Association and put together a committee of 12 elementary school teachers to address the issues. A similar committee will be formed for the secondary-school teachers.

The district brought in trainers earlier this month to work with the elementary school teachers on the Common Core. Further training will take place later this month. In a communication on the subject, Yelich said he will provide needed flexibility so teachers will be free of the previous scripted approach and open the door to modification and adjustment.

The district is also moving forward with efforts to recruit volunteers to form a committee to improve communications between the school and the community.

“It is a priority” of the board, Yelich said.
