Grand Gorge fires under investigation

Delaware County sheriff’s deputies investigating recent fires at two Grand Gorge businesses have arrested a local man in connection with an attempted break-in at an educational center, a media release issued Wednesday said.

As deputies last week were investigating with the Delaware County Fire Investigation Team the Oct. 14 morning fire at Sundaes Restaurant on state Highway 23 in Grand Gorge, the release said, they were advised of an intrusion alarm activation at the Otsego Northern Catskills BOCES on Jump Brook Road early Oct. 14.

On Friday, Oct. 18, sheriff’s investigators charged James S. Hartley Jr., 25, of Grand Gorge, with third-degree attempted criminal trespass in connection with the alarm activation and an attempted break-in at the Board of Cooperative Educational Services center. He was arrested after an investigation in conjunction with the Roxbury constable, the Delaware County Probation Department and the state Division of Parole, the release said.

Hartley was arraigned in the Stamford Town Court and sent to the county jail in lieu of $1,000 cash bail. A parole violation warrant has been issued for Hartley by the state Division of Parole and lodged with the jail as a detainer, according to the release.

Deputies weren’t available late Wednesday afternoon for further comment.

The cause of the Sundae’s Restaurant fire, the fire Sept. 27 at Becker Tire Service and an Oct. 16 leaf fire on Intake Road in Grand Gorge remain under investigation, deputies said in the release.

On the afternoon of Oct. 16, while patrolling Intake Road in Grand Gorge, New York City Department of Environmental Protection Police discovered a fire on that road, according to the release.

Sheriff’s investigators and DEP detectives are trying to identify a small faded black or primer gray color pickup truck observed traveling on Intake Road shortly before the fire was discovered, the release said.

Investigators ask that anyone with information concerning these fires to contact the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division at 746-2336.
