Heavy rains flood Schoharie roads

Heavy rains in Schoharie County Friday afternoon were still causing some problems on roadways by 9:30 p.m. Sheriff Tony Desmond said. People should check road conditions if they are driving through the affected area, as some cleanup efforts were still going on, he said.

The rains started about 3:15 p.m. and hit the towns of Schoharie and Middleburgh hard, he said. The high waters receded in most areas by about 6:30 p.m. but mud and road damage was still causing problems. Nobody was injured, but a ditch by the Middleburgh Central School bus garage was plugged and it took several hours before buses could get to the elementary school, forcing those students to stay late. According to a Facebook posting from the school all students were dismissed by 8:30 p.m.

Stony Brook Road in the town of Schoharie was still being clean as were some main roads leading out of the village of Middleburgh. There was also high water in the villages of Cobleskill and Richmondville, he said.
