---- — A new superintendent will be appointed at a special meeting of the Oneonta City School Board of Education. It will take place 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at the district office at the Center Street School.
Joseph Yelich, superintendent at Waverly Central School, will be appointed school board president Grace Larkin said. The starting salary will be $150,000 for a three-year contract. The starting date is to be determined, but Larkin said it should be midsummer.
The position is currently being filled by interim Superintendent David Rowley, who was appointment following the retirement last year of Michael Shea.
Yelich said he wanted to reserve comment until his appointment and after final discussions with the Waverly Board of Education.
Larkin said Yelich’s background and competencies in such areas as finance made him an excellent fit for the district, and his excellent recommendations show he has done well in other districts. She did not have further details Monday night.
“I am expecting it to be smooth transition,” thanks in large part to Rowley, she said, who said he will spend as much time as the board desires to assist Yelich.
