---- — The State University College of New York at Oneonta has been ranked 36 among the top 150 best colleges for the money nationwide by a new online site.
College Factual uses customizable outcomes-based tools and rankings systems to guide students through the college selection process, according to a media release from the organization.
SUNY Oneonta’s rank reflects the institution’s academic quality and economic value, based on the cost of obtaining an undergraduate degree. A number of outcomes-based factors were used to determine this ranking, such as average student loan debt per student, loan default rates, how well the institution retains and graduates students, and graduates’ starting salaries and earning potential.
College spokesman Hal Legg said “this recognition is a tribute first to our faculty and staff, who give our students top-notch experiences day in and day out, and second to our drive toward ensuring that teaching, learning and scholarship remain at the core of our mission.” High rankings from external sources, whether they’re new like College Factual, or well-established ones, always validate these efforts, he said.
One factor that favors SUNY Oneonta is its tradition of philanthropy that allows it to award scholarships to one of every six students, he said. It helps to reinforce the college’s 125th anniversary campaign, in which funding for scholarships is one of four major focuses, he said.
The rankings are published, College Factual Chief Executive Officer Bill Phelan said, “to get students and parents thinking about key factors they need to consider when choosing a college.”
