---- — Town fire commissioner and planning board member Fred Volpe announced his candidacy Wednesday for the Oneonta Town Board in a media release.

“The town faces a number of challenges going forward, particularly with regard to our economic future,” Volpe wrote. “I believe that my business experience combined with my record of service to the town on the planning board and the fire commission offer town voters an experienced, hometown voice who will be their advocate.”

Volpe, currently a sales associate with Century 21 Chesser Realty, has a record of community involvement that includes service on the board of the YMCA, Upper Catskill Community Council on the Arts and the Oneonta Firemen’s Association, among others.

“I am dedicated to serving the best interests of town residents,” he said in the release. “As the town looks at the issues ahead, whether it’s planning for business development or enhancing our parks and quality of life, my experience and in-depth knowledge of town issues will be helpful as the town board moves forward. “

A native of Italy, Volpe immigrated to Canada in 1967 and moved to Oneonta in 1985. He was an adjunct professor of Italian at the State University of Oneonta.

“We need the voices of ordinary people in our town offices, and I’m an ex-firefighter, EMT and city water department worker who brings real life experience to helping town residents,” Volpe said in the release.

Volpe is running on the Republican, Conservative and Independence party lines in this first bid for town-wide elective office. He lives on West Street with his wife, Ginger, and has three sons and a daughter.
