Day to share science on molecular level

The expanding science of nanotechnology will be highlighted Saturday during NanoDays 2013 at the State University College at Oneonta.

A collaboration of SUNY Oneonta and the Oneonta World of Learning, the afternoon of activities is designed to educate the public about the science of making machines at the molecular level.

Now in its third year, the hands-on activity fair is part of a nationwide educational initiative about nanoscale science and engineering organized by the Nanoscale Informal Science Education Network.

The SUNY Oneonta program will run from noon to 4 p.m. in the lobby of Science I Building on Ravine Parkway. Admission will be free, but donations will be accepted.

Led by student volunteers from the college, participants will be able to explore nanotechnology through a variety of activities, such as a nano-sized scavenger hunt, investigating the relationship between society and technology, playing with “smart” metals, trying on an invisibility cloak, making a color-changing bracelet and meeting a supervillian from the future in the theatrical production, “Attack of the Nanoscientist.”

Three free planetarium shows also will be offered throughout the afternoon. This year’s show will be “Life: A Cosmic Story,” a high-speed ride through the history of life, produced by the California Academy of Sciences and narrated by Jodie Foster. Tickets for the planetarium shows are free but limited. To sign up for tickets, go to www.oneonta.edu/academics/sdc.
