---- — Rep. Richard Hanna will continue to represent the 22nd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, according to unofficial election results Tuesday night.

The Republican primary race for 22nd Congressional District was tight, but Hanna came out on top with roughly 53 percent of the vote, compared to Assemblywoman Claudia Tenney’s approximate 47 percent.

Because there is no Democrat running against Hanna in November’s general election, he will continue to represent the 22nd Congressional District, which covers all of Chenango, Cortland, Madison and Oneida counties and parts of Broome, Herkimer, Oswego and Tioga Counties.

Polls opened at noon on Tuesday and closed at 9 p.m, but many results for counties in the 22nd District were not in until almost 11 p.m.

With 95 percent of precincts reporting by 11:20 p.m., Hanna led by an insurmountable six percentage points.

After voting at St. George’s Orthodox Church in New Hartford at about 2 p.m., Tenney spoke to The Daily Star, saying she was optimistic and grateful, no matter which way the election went.

According to a media release, Tenney was scheduled to join her supporters at Park Place Restaurant in Norwich from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m.

“People have been really positive,” Tenney said. “Primaries are very unpredictable, so it’s hard to say. But so far, people have been great. We’ll have to wait and see.”

Hanna was not available for comment by 11 p.m. Tuesday.
