---- — While the Royal Family was celebrating the birth of a prince, a Hamilton couple said they consider their newborn son just as special.

This isn’t the first time that Nicole Beers said her family has had something in common with the monarchy in England. The 22-year-old new mother said her sister was born the same day as Prince William.

On Monday, her son, Dexter Johnson, was born at 11:42 a.m., weighing 10 pounds, 15 ounces. Both are doing well. The father is her fiance, Bentley Johnson, 25. They both talked by phone Monday from Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown where Dexter was born.

She hadn’t thought of the possibility of her son being born on the same day as the royal baby, until someone pointed out the possibility at work recently. She is a receptionist at Hamilton Orthopedics.

“It’s exciting, now I can’t wait to hear the details,” Beers said. She was scheduled to be married July 27 — the couple had been engaged to for more than a year. They put that off when they found there was a baby on the way.

This is her first child and she was getting ready Monday afternoon, when reached, to take a nap, She was recovering from a cesarean section. “Everything went well,” she said.

Even though he may not be from a royal family, she said of her baby, “he is still a prince.” Unlike the English baby who tradition dictates will follow certain customs, “I don’t know what the future will hold. I will let him choose his own path.”

Since he was born she said, “you just can’t stop looking at him.” He has “some big hands” and a lot of hair. “In my eyes he is more special than the royal baby.”

Bentley Johnson, 25, is a custodian at Hamilton College, he hadn’t thought about his son sharing a birthday with royalty, but today he started to get requests from friends and family for a picture of what they called “the royal baby.”

He said, “We feel blessed we have him” and that baby and mother are healthy.

The couple will support him “in whatever he wants to do,” Johnson said. “I haven’t been able to take my eyes off of him.”

They are starting to read the first articles about the royal birth but “we haven’t really thought about it. We are so wrapped up with everything that is going on.”
