---- — Charged with using pliers to yank three teeth from the mouth of an 8-year-old foster child, a 34-year-old Schoharie County man has been jailed for lack of $10,000 bail, state police reported Friday.
Steven D. Walker of Gallupville was charged by state police at Cobleskill with felony assault and two misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of the girl.
The victim was described by troopers as mentally disabled.
The investigation was triggered when the child complained of mouth pain at school.
Her regular dentist examined her and found that three permanent teeth he had previously observed in her mouth had been forcibly extracted, police said.
The dentist then reported the suspected abuse to Schoharie County Child Protect Services. Case workers then reached out to the state police.
The child was removed from Walker’s home after she was examined by a state police forensic odontologist and an oral surgeon.
Initially arraigned in Richmondville town court, Walker is scheduled to appear in Wright Town Court on Monday evening.
Police offered no information on why the defendant allegedly pulled the teeth out of the girl’s mouth.
