Agency opens Schoharie reservoirs

The upper and lower reservoirs at the Blenheim-Gilboa Pumped Storage Power Project have been reopened to recreational boaters, according to the The New York Power Authority.

Use of the upper reservoir is limited to rowboats, canoes and kayaks only — with or without electric-trolling motors. Gasoline-powered engines and sailboats are prohibited.

The lower reservoir can be used by gas-powered boats, along with rowboats and canoes, with or without-electric trolling motors.

Schoharie Creek just below the lower reservoir remains off limits to fishermen because of restoration work to repair shoreline erosion. It is expected to reopen later this spring.

The reservoirs may be closed to boating at any time at the Power Authority’s discretion.

Boats and boat trailers accessing both reservoirs must be clearly marked with registration numbers and a NYPA permit. Applications for permits may be obtained by calling the Blenheim-Gilboa Visitors Center at (800) 724-0309. Permits will be valid through Sept. 30, when the reservoirs will be closed to boating until April 2014.

Permit holders who intend to use the upper reservoir are required to call (800) 367-6972, extension 6364, the day before they launch and to stop at the South Gate on Valenti Road to notify security personnel of their arrival.

Advance notice is not required to use the lower reservoir. It may be accessed through Mine Kill State Park on Route 30.

Boating will be permitted from 7:30 a.m. until the park closes each day. It will be open until 4 p.m. until the first weekend in May and then will remain open until dusk. The upper reservoir, on Kingsley Road in the Town of Gilboa, is open for boating daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. for permit holders.
