The high-risk sex offender tracked down by Delaware County sheriff’s deputies this week in the loft of a Hamden garage has been hit with new charges of criminal trespassing and criminal mischief, authorities said Thursday.
John K. Cumo Jr., 32, of Walton had left Walton by bicycle last week and broke into seasonal residences on Back River Lane in Hamden, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Investigators believe his ultimate destination was the Capital Region, where he has relatives, Undersheriff Craig DuMond said.
Cumo had been out of state prison since February after serving some 4½ years in connection with a 7-year sentence meted out for a 2007 burglary conviction, according to state Department of Corrections records posted on the agency’s web site.
He had earlier served two years in state prison in connection with a conviction for rape in Rensselaer County.
Cumo was charged Wednesday with a parole violation after he was captured by deputies with assistance from the U.S. Marshals New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force. He is being held without bail at Delaware County Correctional Facility.
