Soldier with local roots dies in Afghanistan

A soldier from Accord who died in Afghanistan on April 28 has family who lives in Delaware County.

Sgt. Shawn M. Farrell II, 24, died in the Nejrab district of Kapisa province from wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire, according to the Department of Defense.

Farrell was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light), Fort Drum.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo directed that flags on state government buildings be flown at half-staff yesterday in his honor.

Farrell’s grandmother, Jacklyn Knowles, who lives in Accord, said she grew up in DeLancey and Farrell’s great grandmother, Carolyn Kirby, lives in Delhi. Other relatives also still live in the area, she said.

Farrell, who was born in Kingston, came to Delaware County a couple times a year, “whenever there was a family function,” she said.

“He had a wonderful sense of humor. He was a very kind, caring young man.” When visiting, she said, he liked to fish with his great grandfather, Rollie Kirby, who died in September.

Farrell had been interested in the military since he was little, Knowles said, and after the 9/11 attacks, “he was more determined than ever to become a soldier.”

Farrell graduated from Roundout Valley High School in 2008, and soon after was stationed in Fort Benning, Ga.

He is survived by his wife, Allison Farrell, and his mother and stepfather, Heather and David Stokes, brothers, sisters, and other relatives. The family is waiting for information from the Army before finalizing funeral plans, she said.
