Oneonta Dollars for Scholars will recognize 57 students today as it presents awards to graduating seniors from Oneonta High School.
The event takes place today from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Hunt Union at State University College at Oneonta.
Awards program chairwoman Carol Baker said a total of $42,500 will be distributed, generally in awards of $500 to $1,000. The ceremony is the culmination of the organization’s yearly fundraising, she said.
“We recognize and admire our students and their individuality. We hope they set their goals and fulfill their dreams” and that the awards help them do that. A wide variety of donors has seen the program as “a viable way to give back to the community.” The awards help students entering two or four year colleges, universities, or vocational and technical programs. “The important thing is for young people to realize how much their community supports them,” she said.
Local Dollars for Scholars President Jacqueline Rowe said she has been involved for five years, since retiring as a high school family and consumer science teacher. It was a natural transition, she said, because she values the importance of learning, including a secondary education.
“It’s important for us as a community to support our young people.” With college costs so high, “we should try to give what we can.”
The community support has been fabulous, she said.
“Every year they are right there, donating to fundraisers include the phone-a-thon. Even with the current tough economy, “they keep coming through. We couldnt ask for better support,” which has allowed the awards to grow from eight the first year they were presented in 1992.
Anyone wanting to donate can send contributions to Oneonta Dollars for Scholars at P.O. Box 1083, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820
