Week in Review: Area leaders face tough budget choices

THURSDAY

The local economy could be another casualty of Hurricane Sandy if downstate residents forgo their annual trips north for deer season, according to some area experts, but all were hoping for a strong season. 

Days before his NASCAR crew was to compete for the Sprint Cup championship behind driver Brad Keselowski’s No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge team, Milford native Paul Wolfe spoke to The Daily Star about the road that led him from Otsego County to the top of the stock-car racing world as Keselowski’s crew chief. Keselowski will go for the Sprint Cup title in Sunday’s race at the Homestead-Miami Speedway in Florida to close out the 2012 season. 

FRIDAY

Word of a proposed apartment complex near the SUNY Oneonta campus prompted the college to discontinue plans to build its own new dormitory. The dorm had been scheduled to open in 2014 — the same target date the Vestal-based Newman Development Group said it hopes to meet for its private student apartments. 

In sports, as San Francisco’s Buster Posey was celebrating his new title as the National League’s Most Valuable Player, the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown was having its own celebration honoring Posey’s San Francisco Giants. The “Autumn Glory” exhibit at the Hall, which will be on display through the end of the 2013 baseball season, pays tribute to the World Series champions with a variety of artifacts from the 2012 Fall Classic.
