Police: Man robbed

shop with hammer

A liquor store in the village of Richmondville was robbed Tuesday night by a hammer-wielding masked man who snatched the cash register and ran out of the store, the Schoharie County Sheriff’s Office reported today.

The female clerk who was working alone behind the counter at the time of the robbery at Elroy’s Liquor Store was shaken up by the confrontation but was not harmed, said store owner Miroslav Rezek.

Investigators said a white male wearing a ski mask entered the store at 334 Main St. shortly before 7 p.m., displayed the hammer and demanded money.

The man then fled on foot. Rezek said if a vehicle was involved in the getaway, it was not observed by the clerk.

The culprit was described by police as having a slim build, standing 5 feet 7 inches and weighing about 150 pounds.

The thief evaded having his image captured by the store’s video surveillance system because the monitoring device “just went down,” the owner said, noting, “We haven’t had the money to fix it.”

Police urged anyone with information about the crime to contact the Sheriff’s Office by calling 518-295-8114.
