Mayor to hold hearing on ward changes

Oneonta’s mayor will have a public hearing tonight on Local Law No. 2, 2012, which changes ward boundaries.

The hearing will be in Common Council Chambers at City Hall at the beginning of the 7 p.m. meeting. A redistricting commission met this year to review population figures and re-align wards to have more-evenly distributed populations.

Also tonight, mayor’s hearings for ordinances on conduct rules for peddling, expenses for public improvements for water, and on property tax penalties will be held to give the public opportunities to comment.

Later in the meeting, Mayor Dick Miller will indicate if he will sign the measures, which were approved by the council Dec. 4.

Common Council members will meet for a “retreat session’’ in the basement conference room at City Hall at 5 p.m.

During the regular meeting, Police Chief Dennis Nayor and Fire Chief Patrick Pidgeon will give reports on public safety.

In other items listed on the agenda for tonight’s meeting, the council will:

— Declare Jan. 3 each year as “Mike Naples Day,” a day to recognize city workers and to be a day of prayer for the well-being of the city. Naples attended his first meeting as a council member Jan. 3, after being elected the previous November to represent the Sixth Ward. On Jan. 9, he died unexpectedly at the age of 58 of natural causes. Naples had retired in 2009 after 30 years working in various city departments.

— Recognize the Oneonta High School Boys Soccer team.

— Award a contract for a Central Business District Streetlight Replacement project.

— Consider personnel actions, wage rates, salaries and a manual.

— Change parking restrictions, spaces and times in some areas.
